Kennedy's Radical Overhaul Slashes Childhood Vaccines and Reshapes US Health Policy

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has made sweeping changes to US health insurance policy since becoming Health Secretary in 2025. His reforms include major cuts to childhood vaccine schedules, new dietary guidelines, and a push for greater transparency in drug pricing. Critics argue the moves roll back long-standing public health protections.

The latest guidelines also encourage Americans to question expert advice and prioritise personal judgement in health insurance decisions.

In early 2026, Kennedy overhauled federal vaccine recommendations for children. Routine vaccinations against influenza, Hepatitis A, meningitis, and rotavirus were removed from the standard schedule. The number of diseases covered dropped from 17 to 11. COVID-19 vaccines for children and pregnant women were also withdrawn, shifting decisions to individual doctors. This marks a sharp departure from the Biden administration's broader approach.

Kennedy bypassed expert advisory committees when implementing the changes. His decisions sparked controversy, particularly due to past claims linking vaccines to autism—a theory widely discredited by scientific research. Instead of universal mandates, he emphasised personalised medical choices.

On nutrition, Kennedy released new dietary guidelines in partnership with the Department of Agriculture. These promote red meat and dairy while calling for stricter limits on ultra-processed foods. He accused large corporations of shaping previous federal nutrition advice under Biden. However, a report from Protect Our Care labelled the new meal plans as unaffordable for school programmes.

Price transparency has been another focus. Kennedy pushed for clearer drug cost disclosures, citing Trump-era policies like most favoured nations agreements. He also called for better sharing of medical records between patients and AI healthcare providers. Protect Our Care criticised these reforms, warning they could weaken access to essential vaccines and nutrition support.

Kennedy's policies have reshaped federal health insurance guidelines, reducing vaccine requirements and altering dietary advice. The changes shift responsibility from public health bodies to individual choice. Critics claim the reforms risk undermining long-term health protections, particularly for children and low-income families.
