Kalanamak Rice: The Ancient Grain Revolutionizing Healthy Diets in India

Kalanamak rice, often called Buddha Rice, has been grown in India since 600 BC. This ancient grain has now gained recognition for its health benefits and unique nutritional profile. In 2012, the Government of India awarded it the Geographical Indication (GI) Tag, protecting its heritage and origin. The cultivation of Kalanamak rice is restricted to 11 districts in Uttar Pradesh’s 7th Zone. This ensures its authenticity and traditional farming methods remain intact. Unlike regular rice, it contains 16.73g of protein per 100g, making it a protein-rich alternative.

Its nutritional advantages extend further. With 57.72g of carbohydrates per 100g, it has a lower glycemic index than refined rice, which benefits those managing diabetes. The grain also provides 17.27g of dietary fibre per 100g, aiding digestion and gut health. Beyond protein and fibre, Kalanamak rice is packed with antioxidants and essential micronutrients. It contains only 3.73g of fat per 100g, supporting weight management and heart health. These qualities make it a preferred choice for health-conscious and diabetic-friendly diets. In Indian cuisine, rice is a staple, featured in dishes like Dosas and Kadhi Chawal. Kalanamak rice offers a more balanced option, combining lower carbohydrates with higher protein levels compared to standard varieties.

Kalanamak rice stands out for its rich history and superior nutrition. Its high protein, fibre, and antioxidant content make it a valuable addition to modern diets. As demand for healthier grains grows, this ancient variety continues to gain popularity across India.
