Judi Sheppard Missett, the founder of Jazzercise, still dances every day at 80. Over 50 years after launching the fitness programme, she remains deeply involved in teaching and designing routines. Her approach to health—balancing movement, simple nutrition, and small treats—has kept her active for decades.
Missett started Jazzercise in Los Angeles in 1969. Within five years, it spread across Southern California, reaching cities like Marina del Rey and Redondo Beach. By 1974, more than 100 weekly classes ran in the Los Angeles area, driven by word-of-mouth and local gyms.
She soon simplified her teaching style to make sessions more fun and accessible. Attendance quickly grew, with 60 participants joining by the third class. The programme expanded nationally, then globally, becoming a fitness community Missett describes as family.
Today, Jazzercise operates in over 2,000 locations worldwide. It serves more than 55,000 customers in the U.S. alone and generated $77 million (€70.9 million) last year. Missett's daughter now leads as CEO and head choreographer, while her granddaughter teaches classes.
Missett avoids strict diets, focusing instead on lean protein and green vegetables. She allows herself occasional indulgences like a hot fudge sundae or Dr Pepper. Her daily routine includes weightlifting, long walks, and prioritising time for others.
Jazzercise continues to thrive under Missett's influence, blending fitness with community. Her relaxed yet consistent approach to health has shaped both her longevity and the programme's enduring success. The brand remains a major force in the fitness industry, with thousands of classes still running weekly.
