Indigenous youth unite through dance at historic Ontario camp

Young dancers from across Canada are gathering this week for a special camp in Brant, Ontario. For the first time, participants—including those from remote and fly-in communities—will meet in person after months of training at home. The event is part of a national program using dance to boost school engagement among Indigenous youth. The camp is hosted by Outside Looking In, an Indigenous-led non-profit organisation. It is taking place at the Tim Hortons Foundation Camp, bringing together students who have prepared remotely. Many travelled long distances to attend.

Over the week, the group will work on a performance blending hip-hop and Indigenous traditions. Artistic director Candace Scott-Moore is leading the fusion of styles. The showcase will be held in Toronto next Friday. Organisers have emphasised the role of arts in supporting young Indigenous people. The program aims to strengthen confidence, cultural pride, and school participation through creative expression.
