Pears require a little care to enjoy at their best. Unlike many fruits, they ripen from the inside out and are often picked before fully mature. A few simple steps can ensure they stay fresh and flavourful for longer.

Pears are usually harvested at peak minimum maturity, long before they soften. This allows them to ripen evenly off the tree. The best way to test ripeness is by gently pressing the neck—if it yields slightly, the fruit is ready to eat.

Once ripe, pears should be stored in the fridge to extend freshness for several days. For those cut or sliced, browning occurs quickly due to oxygen exposure, though this doesn’t affect taste. Coating them in lemon juice and sealing them in an airtight container slows this process. Ripening speed depends on storage. Leaving pears at room temperature, especially near ethylene-producing fruits like bananas, accelerates the process. Refrigeration, however, slows it down. Overripe pears still have uses—they work well in smoothies, pear butter, or savoury sauces. Meanwhile, in Germany, plum season runs from August to mid-October. Early varieties like Blue Dust and Ruby are picked in August, while Hauszwetschge follows from early September to mid-October.

With proper handling, pears stay fresh and flavourful for days. Simple checks and storage methods make the most of their natural sweetness and texture. Even overripe fruit can be repurposed, reducing waste and adding versatility in the kitchen.
