How to freeze butter and keep it fresh for months

Freezing butter is a simple way to extend its shelf life for months. Whether it’s classic, salted, or even homemade, all types hold up well in the deep freezer. The method also works for margarine, making it a useful trick for cutting down on waste.

Unsalted butter lasts 6–9 months in the deep freezer, while salted varieties can keep for up to a year. Herb butter stays fresh for around six months, and margarine remains good for roughly nine. To store it, place the butter directly in the deep freezer or wrap it tightly in cling film or a freezer bag. Portioning before freezing makes it easier to grab just the right amount later.

For best results, thaw butter slowly in the fridge overnight. This preserves its texture and flavor. When time is short, a microwave can be used in 10-second bursts on low power, or the butter can be grated while frozen. Another quick method is placing it in lukewarm water. However, refreezing after microwave thawing is not advised. Once thawed, butter should be used within a few days, as it loses some of its aroma—similar to other dairy products like fresh cheese or yogurt.

Freezing butter offers a practical way to keep it fresh for months without losing quality. The process works for all varieties, including margarine, and allows for easy portion control. With the right thawing method, it stays ready to use whenever needed.
