How Colorful Foods Pack a Powerful Health Punch with Carotenoids

Carotenoids, the natural pigments that give red, orange, and yellow fruits and vegetables their bright colours, play a vital role in health. These compounds act as powerful antioxidants, protecting cells and lowering the risk of several diseases. Found in everyday foods like carrots, spinach, and peppers, they offer benefits ranging from improved vision to stronger immune defences.

Carotenoids fall into two main groups: xanthophylls and carotenes. Xanthophylls, such as lutein and zeaxanthin, contain oxygen and appear yellow, while carotenes, like beta-carotene, lack oxygen and give foods an orange hue. Both types help fight cell damage caused by free radicals.

Some carotenoids, including beta-carotene, convert into vitamin A—a nutrient essential for immune function and eye health. Lutein and zeaxanthin, found in leafy greens, also shield the eyes from harmful blue light and may slow macular degeneration. Beyond vision, these compounds support heart health by reducing inflammation and preventing artery blockages.

A diet rich in carotenoids has been linked to a lower risk of certain cancers, including breast, prostate, lung, and colorectal types. Common sources include apricots, bell peppers, broccoli, carrots, sweet potatoes, and tomatoes. To boost absorption, experts recommend cooking these foods in healthy oils.

The World Health Organization (WHO) highlights vitamin A's critical role in combating measles in vulnerable regions. In countries with widespread deficiencies, high-dose vitamin A supplements are given to infected children to cut mortality and complications. However, this treatment requires careful assessment to avoid overdose and is not a substitute for vaccination.

While carotenoids provide significant health benefits, experts stress that food should remain the primary source of these nutrients. Supplements are only advised under medical supervision. By including a variety of colourful fruits and vegetables in meals, people can naturally improve their intake and support long-term well-being.
