How a Mexico City Police Officer Balances Motherhood and a High-Stakes Career

Marisol Martínez Hernández, a 43-year-old police officer in Mexico City, has balanced a demanding career with raising two daughters. Over the years, she has worked in law enforcement while completing her education and supporting her family. Her journey reflects both personal determination and professional commitment. Marisol’s path changed when she became pregnant with her first daughter, Idrhil, now 20. At the time, she paused her studies and left her job to focus on motherhood. She describes that period as the most transformative of her life, forcing her to 'grow up' and take on new responsibilities.

When Idrhil was just a year and a half old, Marisol enrolled in the police academy. She later joined School Security in Álvaro Obregón, where she served for 12 years. Now, she works 24-hour shifts followed by 48 hours off, a schedule that demands careful planning.

Currently, Marisol is part of the Atenea Unit within Mexico City’s Citizens’ Security Secretariat. This specialised group consists of female officers trained to handle public demonstrations and provide security at large recreational events. Despite her busy career, she returned to education, earning a law degree while working. Today, she is also pursuing a master’s degree.

Marisol has another daughter, Airyn, who is 13. She believes her role as a mother began the moment she decided to continue her pregnancy.
