High-flavanol cocoa may shield blood vessels from sitting's silent harm
A new study has found that a high-flavanol cocoa drink can help protect blood vessels from the harmful affects of prolonged sitting. Researchers discovered that just two hours of uninterrupted sitting weakens artery function, raising cardiovascular risks. The findings, published in the Journal of Physiology, suggest a simple dietary way to offset some of the damage caused by inactivity.
The study involved participants who drank a cocoa beverage rich in flavanols (695 mg) before sitting for two hours. This dose, much higher than what's found in standard cocoa or dark chocolate, prevented the decline in endothelial function—a key marker of vascular health. Both highly fit and less fit individuals saw benefits from the flavanol-rich drink.
On average, people sit for around eight hours a day, a habit linked to a higher risk of heart disease. Previous research has shown that even short periods of sitting harm the lining of arteries, which helps regulate blood flow. The study highlights that consuming flavanol-packed foods and drinks—such as specialty cocoa powders, berries, apples, or green and black tea—could help reduce these risks.
The exact flavanol content of the placebo drink used in the study was not disclosed. However, the results confirm that a concentrated dose of these compounds can counteract some of the negative effects of sitting on the vascular system.
The findings point to a practical solution for those with sedentary lifestyles. While avoiding long periods of sitting remains important, adding flavanol-rich foods may offer some protection. The study reinforces the idea that diet can play a role in maintaining heart health, even during times of inactivity.
