Hesse's Rare Tradition of Horse Logging Keeps Forests Alive
Horse instead of Machine - What is the Job of the Draft Horses? - Hesse's Rare Tradition of Horse Logging Keeps Forests Alive
In Hesse, a small but dedicated group of businesses still rely on draft horses for logging and farming. While modern machinery dominates most operations, around eight companies specialise in this traditional method. The practice remains rare across Germany, with no large-scale projects documented in any federal state by early 2026.
At Schloss Freudenberg, horse logging plays a key role in forest maintenance. The animals drag tree trunks along chains to areas where machines cannot easily reach. This method helps preserve the forest's health while reducing soil damage.
The Hessian Draft Horse Association supports the use of horses in forestry. They argue that combining horse power with machinery creates a more ecological and efficient system. However, adoption remains limited, with no widespread implementation in German forests or agricultural sectors.
Hubertus Assmann, a local horse farmer, uses his team for plowing fields. He describes the work as both satisfying and quieter than using tractors. Visitors can experience horse logging firsthand at the annual Draft Horse Festival held at Schloss Freudenberg.
Horse logging continues as a niche practice in Hesse, with only a handful of specialists keeping the tradition alive. The method offers environmental benefits but has not gained broader traction in Germany. For now, festivals and small-scale projects remain the primary way for the public to engage with this age-old technique.
