Hamburg's Weidenbaums Ufer transforms industrial land into 700 eco-friendly homes by 2028

A major new residential quarter named Weidenbaums Ufer is taking shape in Hamburg-Bergedorf. The project, led by a prominent realtor, will transform a 7-hectare former industrial site into a mixed-use neighborhood with over 700 homes. Construction is already underway, with the first residents set to arrive in 2028.

The development, west of the Schleusengraben, part of Bergedorf's central waterfront axis, began site preparation and infrastructure work in 2023. The first construction phase, FLEET, is now starting along the water's edge.

The quarter will blend market-rate and subsidised housing, alongside a daycare center and a local supply hub featuring a supermarket and drugstore. Urban design plans emphasise density without sacrificing green space, including public waterfront paths, a central neighborhood square, and a large landscape park.

Sustainability is a key focus, with each building equipped with its own renewable energy system, backed by photovoltaic panels. Connectivity will also improve, thanks to a new pedestrian and cyclist bridge over the Schleusengraben. This bridge will directly link the quarter to Bergedorf's downtown, making the area more accessible.

Pre-sales for homes will launch in January 2026, though exact move-in dates for 2028 have yet to be confirmed.

Once complete, Weidenbaums Ufer will add hundreds of new homes to Hamburg's housing stock. The mix of green spaces, renewable energy, and improved pedestrian links aims to create a self-sustaining urban community. The first phase of residents is expected to settle in by 2028.
