Broad Alliance Calls for Strong and Reliable Social State - German Unions Rally to Defend Social Security Against Misinformation

A broad alliance of trade unions, welfare groups, and environmental organisations has joined forces to defend Germany's social welfare system. The coalition, representing over 20 million people, argues that recent reforms—covering sick pay, job security, pensions, and part-time work—have faced unfair criticism and misinformation.

The alliance claims the debate around social benefits has become unbalanced. Critics increasingly describe these protections as unaffordable burdens, ignoring their economic and social value. Verena Bentele, president of the social welfare association VdK, condemned what she called a rising tide of defamation against the welfare state. She urged a return to fact-based discussions rather than political rhetoric.

Frank Werneke, chair of the Verdi trade union, highlighted a wave of attacks on key reforms. These include changes to paid sick leave, job protection laws, pension levels, and the right to reduce working hours. The alliance counters that such measures are not economic drains but essential pillars of a strong economy.

Contrary to popular belief, government subsidies for pension funds have not grown over recent decades. In fact, their share of economic output has fallen. The group also points out that many wealthy individuals contribute little or nothing to financing the system, calling for fairer funding rules.

Beyond economics, the alliance stresses the welfare state's role in holding society together. It fosters social cohesion and supports democratic stability, they argue. Their core message is clear: a robust welfare system and national prosperity are deeply connected.

The coalition's campaign aims to shift the narrative around social benefits. They want policies judged on evidence, not assumptions. With 14 major organisations involved, the push for a fairer debate—and fairer contributions—is set to continue.
