Fungi-Based Super-Protein Fermotein Could Revolutionize Health and Sustainability by 2026
A Dutch startup called The Protein Brewery is set to launch Fermotein, a high-protein, high-fibre ingredient made from fungi. The product promises to support long-term health while offering a sustainable alternative to traditional protein sources. Meanwhile, recent studies highlight a concerning trend: over half of the remaining lifespan for those born in 2024 may be spent in poor health.
Fermotein is a whole-cell bioproduct derived from Rhizomucor pusillus, an extremophilic fungus that thrives in harsh conditions like low pH and high temperatures. Half of its composition is complete protein, scoring a perfect 1 on the PDCAAS scale, while nearly 30% is dietary fibre with potential prebiotic benefits. The key bioactive compound in Fermotein is spermidine, a polyamine linked to cellular growth, immune regulation, and autophagy—a process that helps cells renew themselves.
The Protein Brewery has secured €30 million in Series B funding and additional EU LIFE grants to bring Fermotein to market. The company expects EU approval by mid-2026 and plans to focus on commercial and operational execution that same year. If successful, Fermotein could become a staple in the food industry, offering 26 times more protein per kilogram than meat, five times more than soy, and four times more than peas—all while using just 1% of the land, 5% of the water, and emitting 3% of the greenhouse gases compared to beef production. Research suggests Fermotein may help maintain health across different life stages, aiding in weight management, gut microbiome balance, cognitive function, and physical vitality. This comes at a time when life expectancy in Western Europe has risen significantly: those born in 2024 are projected to live 17 years longer than people born in 1950. Yet, despite this progress, more than half of those additional years may be marked by declining health.
The Protein Brewery's Fermotein aims to address both sustainability and health challenges in the food industry. With its high protein yield, low environmental impact, and potential benefits for longevity, the product could play a role in improving quality of life as populations age. The company's next steps depend on regulatory approval and successful scaling of production by 2026.
