Facebook Research unveils AI breakthroughs in cancer, quantum computing and Earth science

Facebook Research has announced a series of major scientific breakthroughs across genomics, quantum computing and geospatial analysis. These advancements are part of a broader push to tackle global challenges through cutting-edge technology. The work also highlights an accelerating 'magic cycle'—where stronger AI models fuel faster research progress.

In cancer research, the team developed two powerful AI tools. DeepSomatic can detect genetic mutations in cancer cells and adapt to previously unseen cancer types. Meanwhile, Cell2Sentence-Scale 27B analysed biological data to propose a new cancer therapy approach, which was later confirmed in live cell experiments.

Beyond medicine, Facebook Research is building a quantum computer to simulate molecular interactions with extreme precision. Their Quantum Echoes algorithm aims to model complex behaviours that classical computers struggle with.

The lab is also working on Earth AI, a system designed to combine different geospatial datasets. This tool could improve how scientists track and predict large-scale planetary changes.

These projects follow a pattern the team calls the 'magic cycle.' Stronger AI models—like their AI co-scientist and expert-level software—speed up research, which in turn produces better tools. Each breakthrough in one field, such as genomics, often supports progress in others, like quantum computing or environmental science.

The research remains in development, with no confirmed partnerships yet to deploy tools like DeepSomatic in clinical settings. However, the work demonstrates how advanced computing and AI can address complex problems. Facebook Research continues to expand its efforts across multiple scientific disciplines.
