Europe's Ozempic boom meets simple tricks to curb cravings

More people in Europe are turning to GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy for weight loss and diabetes care. Since May 2023, prescriptions have risen sharply, with 12% of adults now using them—up 6% from the previous year. But beyond medication, simple habits like distraction, exercise, and hydration can also help manage hunger and cravings.

GLP-1 medications have seen a surge in demand across Western Europe, particularly in Germany. Media coverage and broader approvals for weight management have driven the increase. Yet supply shortages have occasionally limited access in some countries.

Research shows these drugs help control appetite by regulating blood sugar. But non-medical strategies can also play a role. For example, aerobic exercise boosts a peptide that naturally suppresses hunger. Even small actions like clenching a fist or tightening a muscle may reduce cravings in the moment. Distraction can also make a difference. Watching a funny video, calling a friend, or solving a puzzle can delay cravings long enough for them to pass. Similarly, dehydration often mimics hunger, so drinking water can prevent unnecessary snacking. Green or black tea may further help by stabilising glucose levels and aiding fat metabolism. Emotional eating, triggered by stress, can be eased through acts of kindness or focusing on forgiveness. These approaches lower stress hormones, reducing the urge to overeat.

GLP-1 drugs remain a popular choice for weight and diabetes management, with usage climbing steadily. However, everyday habits—from staying hydrated to engaging in light exercise—can also curb hunger and cravings. Together, these methods offer a mix of medical and lifestyle-based solutions for those looking to manage their appetite.
