Cox's Bazar breaks visitor records as Eid crowds flood beaches and hotels
Cox's Bazar is seeing a record-breaking influx of visitors during this year's Eid-ul-Fitr holidays. Hotels, motels and resorts are fully booked, with over 500 accommodations operating at maximum capacity. The surge has brought new energy to the coastal district's tourism-driven economy. Key beaches such as Kolatoli, Sugandha and Laboni remain crowded from morning until night. Popular spots like Inani Beach, Marine Drive and Himchhari are also packed, along with cultural sites including Ramu Buddhist Temple and Moheshkhali's Adinath Temple.
Local businesses are thriving because of the tourist rush. Mofizur Rahman, a dried fish seller, reported a sharp rise in sales since Eid began. The influx has particularly benefited traders who rely on seasonal visitors. With nearly 2 million people visiting Cox's Bazar annually—mostly Bangladeshi nationals—authorities have reinforced security across the district. However, beach safety remains a concern. Md Imtiaz Ahmed of Sea Safe Lifeguard noted that limited staffing makes it difficult to monitor all areas effectively. Abul Kashem Sikder, head of the local hotel owners' association, confirmed that every room is occupied, reflecting the unprecedented demand. A tourist from Narayanganj, Abdul Mabud, chose Cox's Bazar for Eid because of its natural beauty. Last year's holiday saw around 970,000 visitors, but this year's numbers appear even higher.
The massive turnout has revitalised Cox's Bazar's economy, especially for dried fish traders and hospitality businesses. Authorities continue to manage security and safety despite the challenges posed by the overwhelming crowds. The district remains a top destination for domestic travellers during peak seasons.
