China's men now tower over global averages after decades of rapid growth
The average height of people in China has risen sharply over recent decades. New data shows men aged 19 grew by 8.1 cm between 1985 and 2019, while women gained 6.1 cm. This growth far outpaces trends in other nations, including India, where average heights have stalled or even fallen.
Chinese men now stand at nearly 170 cm on average, with women averaging 158 cm. The country recorded the largest male height increase globally over the past 30 to 40 years. Experts attribute this surge to better nutrition and rising living standards.
Unlike some nations, China did not introduce specific policies to boost height. Instead, broader measures like the one-child policy (1979–2015) and later the two- and three-child policies aimed to control population growth. These indirectly improved food security and economic stability, easing pressure on resources.
Meanwhile, other countries have also seen notable gains. South Korea, Iran, and several European nations report rising average heights. In contrast, the US and UK have experienced a plateau in recent decades.
India presents a different picture. The average height there has either stagnated or declined, particularly for men. Researchers link this trend to persistent malnutrition, widespread poverty, and deep social inequality.
China's height gains highlight the impact of economic and nutritional progress. While other nations like South Korea and Iran follow similar upward trends, India's struggles with inequality continue to hold back growth. The data underscores how living conditions directly shape physical development across generations.
