Käthe Kollwitz to Jutta Müller: Exhibitions in Chemnitz - Chemnitz Art Collections Unveils Bold 2026 Exhibition Lineup Across Iconic Venues

Chemnitz Art Collections has announced a diverse programme of exhibitions for 2026. The events will span multiple venues, from the Gunzenhauser Museum to the smac, with themes ranging from food and utopia to historical craftsmanship. Several displays will also feature works by renowned artists like Käthe Kollwitz and Wolfgang Mattheuer.

At the Schlossberg Museum, an exhibition will honour ice skating coach Jutta Müller. For the first time, items from her personal estate will go on public display.

The Gunzenhauser Museum’s 2026 series will explore food as a cultural theme. Titled From Eve’s Apple to Identity, the show will trace how food shapes history and society.

Meanwhile, Utopia: The Right to Hope will open at Kunstsammlungen am Theaterplatz. Contemporary artists will present visions of a better future, linking grand ideals with daily life. This exhibition runs through April.

A separate display at the same venue will focus on Käthe Kollwitz. Her works will be paired with student photographs, creating a dialogue between her era and modern perspectives.

The Karl Schmidt-Rottluff House will highlight the artist’s craftsmanship and private collection. This exhibition closes on February 22.

Later in the year, the smac museum will host an Etruscan exhibition in late October. Before that, from May 8 to July 26, Threads will showcase stories of Jewish families across multiple Chemnitz museums, including Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz (opening May 28).

Another exhibition will feature the works of Wolfgang Mattheuer and his wife, Ursula Mattheuer-Neustädt. Their combined pieces will offer insight into their shared artistic vision.

The 2026 programme covers a wide range of themes, from historical artefacts to contemporary art. Visitors will have the chance to explore food, utopia, and personal legacies through multiple exhibitions. Each event is scheduled across different venues, ensuring varied experiences throughout the year.
