Channyn Lynne Parker Makes History as First Black Trans CEO of Equality Illinois

Channyn Lynne Parker has become the first Black, transgender woman to lead Equality Illinois. The organization, founded in 1991 as the Illinois Federation for Human Rights, now has a new CEO focused on advocacy and inclusion. Parker brings a strong belief in ensuring everyone feels seen, heard, and valued.

Before joining Equality Illinois, Parker served as CEO of Brave Space Alliance, a Chicago-based LGBTQ+ support organization. She has also worked at the University of Chicago and Howard Brown Health, building experience in community health and civil rights.

Parker's leadership comes at a time when LGBTQ+ rights face political challenges. She emphasises the importance of coalition-building and protecting civil liberties for marginalised groups. Her approach centres on finding common ground, arguing that people share more similarities than differences.

In her new role, Parker aims to be a strong advocate for those whose voices often go unheard. She believes representation matters and that true equality requires active effort from all levels of society.

Parker's appointment marks a historic moment for Equality Illinois. Her background in advocacy and community work positions her to lead the organization through ongoing struggles for LGBTQ+ rights. The focus remains on ensuring dignity and fairness for all, regardless of identity.
