CDC Warns of Five Diarrheal Illnesses Spreading in August

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will focus on five diarrheal illnesses in August. A recent report highlights the risks of Salmonella, E. coli, Listeria, Campylobacter and Cyclospora infections. Over the past year, outbreaks were most common in California, Texas and Florida.

The CDC's epidemiology team has tracked these enteric diseases for the last 12 months. Between March 2025 and March 2026, the highest number of cases appeared in three states. Now, the agency is reminding the public of key prevention steps.

Proper handwashing remains one of the best defences. The CDC recommends scrubbing hands for at least 20 seconds, covering all surfaces—including under nails, wrists and between fingers. Extra care is needed after handling pets, changing nappies, preparing food or cleaning up after animals. Food safety also plays a critical role. Raw meat should never touch fresh produce, and juices must not drip onto other foods. Meat must reach safe internal temperatures before eating, while fruit and vegetables should be washed thoroughly. Swimming in contaminated water increases infection risks, so those with diarrhoea should avoid pools, lakes or rivers until symptoms have stopped for at least 24 hours. Anyone showing signs of illness is advised to see a doctor. Cooking for others should also be avoided until fully recovered.

The CDC's August campaign aims to cut infection rates by reinforcing hygiene and food safety. By following these steps, the public can lower the risk of spreading diarrheal diseases. The agency continues to monitor outbreaks across the US.
