California's First Rubisco Protein Smoothie Debuts at Palmetto Superfoods
A new protein smoothie, the Blade Smoothie, made from 50,000 alfalfa leaves has arrived in California. Palmetto Superfoods is the first US foodservice chain to offer this innovative smoothie, featuring Leaft Foods' innovative Rubisco protein. The launch comes as demand for plant-based proteins surges across global markets.
The move also reflects a growing trend among Americans prioritising protein intake, driven by new dietary guidelines and the rise of weight-loss medications.
Leaft Foods, founded in 2019, has seen demand for its Rubisco protein grow by 25-30% annually. The plant-based protein, extracted from alfalfa leaves, is now used in food products, animal feed, and cosmetics. Its delicate structure is preserved during processing, giving it a high protein quality score comparable to beef, eggs, and dairy.
The Blade Smoothie, priced at $13.95, contains 18g of Rubisco protein per serving. It also provides essential amino acids, bioavailable iron, and vitamins B2, B7, B12, and K1. Additional nutrients like L-tyrosine, leucine, and tryptophan support digestion, immunity, and skin health.
Leaft Foods has scaled up production and partnered with companies like Lacto Japan and New Zealand's Foodstuffs. These collaborations aim to replace egg protein in baked goods and expand the protein's use in global food manufacturing.
The launch aligns with shifting consumer habits. Nearly 60% of Americans plan to increase protein intake in 2025 for energy, muscle strength, and weight management. The trend is partly driven by the rising use of GLP-1 medications, which can lead to muscle loss, pushing food companies to adapt.
The Blade Smoothie is now available at Palmetto Superfoods stores across California. Its high protein content and nutrient profile cater to health-conscious consumers and those adjusting to new dietary needs. The product marks a step forward for Leaft Foods as it expands into both business and consumer markets.
