Braunschweig's New Teaching Kitchen Transforms Children's Cooking Education

A newly renovated teaching kitchen, equipped with modern kitchenaid appliances, has opened at Diesterwegstraße Primary School in Braunschweig. The 'Plietsche Children's Kitchen' initiative, funded by the Kroschke Children's Foundation, will now offer regular cooking courses in the kitchen for pupils. Lord Mayor Dr. Thorsten Kornblum officially handed over the space after a five-month renovation project.

The kitchen's modernisation cost around €120,000 and was supported by the Kroschke Children's Foundation. The space includes mobile workstations and flexible tables, allowing quick adjustments for kitchen experiments or group cooking. The design ensures children can learn, prepare meals, and eat together in the same kitchen area.

The 'Plietsche Children's Kitchen' program, originally developed by Hamburg's SchlauFox e.V., will now run twice a year at the school. Each course involves two staff members working with groups of ten to twelve children once a week in the kitchen. Sessions begin with a welcome circle, where pupils discuss recipes and ingredient origins, followed by interactive lessons using an ActivePanel.

From the new school year, the program will expand to two cooking courses per week in the kitchen. The first semester will be closely monitored to ensure long-term success. The foundation has also secured a five-year financial plan, raising €145,000 from donors like the Eckensberger Foundation, PSD Bank, and the Rotary Club of Braunschweig. Future plans include extending the initiative to other schools in the region.

The renovated kitchen and expanded program aim to provide hands-on learning for more children in Braunschweig. With sustained funding and a structured rollout, the 'Plietsche Children's Kitchen' is set to grow beyond Diesterwegstraße Primary School. The project reflects ongoing collaboration between local authorities, educators, and charitable organisations.
