Barnesville secures £1.2M to upgrade homes and local businesses by 2028

Barnesville has secured a £1.2 million grant to upgrade homes and businesses across the city. The funding will focus on improving energy efficiency, accessibility and safety in 21 single-family homes and 13 commercial buildings. Work is set to begin once formal applications open in December.

The Small City Development Program grant will support a range of improvements. For owner-occupied homes, the money can cover exterior repairs, system upgrades and general quality enhancements. Homeowners may qualify for zero-interest, forgivable loans of up to £24,850.

Businesses can use the funds to modernise facades, fix building code violations and boost energy efficiency. Grants of up to £40,000 are available, provided the business contributes a 20% match. One local shop, Barnesville Grocery, will use its share to install automatic doors, making the entrance accessible for wheelchair users and those with mobility aids.

The city has until September 2028 to spend the money. All projects must be completed within the next three years, with work scheduled to start after the application process opens in December.

The programme aims to make buildings safer, more efficient and easier to use. Residents and business owners will soon be able to apply for support. If fully utilised, the upgrades will benefit dozens of properties across Barnesville.
