Baden-Württemberg's organic initiative transforms school meals with 30% regional ingredients

A two-year initiative in Baden-Württemberg has helped 16 institutions shift toward more sustainable meal options. The 'Enjoy Organic Together' project focused on increasing the use of regional organic products in schools, nurseries, and other communal kitchens. By its conclusion in February 2026, the effort had achieved significant improvements in meal quality and sustainability.

The project ran in two phases, beginning in January 2021 and wrapping up in December 2023 before its final stage ended this year. Twelve of the 16 participating institutions were schools or childcare centres, where changes were made to meal plans, waste reduction, and communication about sustainable eating.

Before the project, regional organic ingredients made up just seven percent of meals on average. By the end, this figure had climbed to around 30 percent—a fourfold increase. The share of regional products, regardless of organic certification, also doubled over the same period.

Supported by Baden-Württemberg's organic model regions, the initiative earned certification for the institutions involved. Officials described it as a key step in growing demand for locally sourced, organic food in communal catering. More details about the organic model regions, including contact information, are available online.

The project's results show a clear rise in sustainable food practices across participating institutions. With organic and regional ingredients now forming a much larger part of meal plans, the initiative has set a foundation for long-term change. The model regions continue to provide support for similar efforts in the future.
