Astana's bold plan turns a lake into a sprawling urban ecopark

Astana is moving forward with a major green initiative to transform Small Taldykol Lake into a sprawling ecopark. Mayor Zhenis Kassymbek recently shared updates on the project, which aims to create a peaceful natural retreat on the city’s outskirts. The plans include extensive planting, new infrastructure, and careful environmental management. Work on the ecopark has already begun, with engineering teams preparing the site for development. This year, the focus will be on building essential technical facilities, including a filtration system and new wells to regulate water levels. By autumn, the first phase of tree and plant planting will start, adding over 1.1 million green spaces across Astana.

The project also involves upgrading more than 170 residential courtyards and public areas in the city. This year, the first walking routes will open, alongside large-scale greening efforts. Next year, the team plans to finish additional walking paths and establish quiet recreation zones for visitors.

The goal is to balance urban growth with nature conservation, ensuring the ecopark supports biodiversity while offering residents a serene escape. The Small Taldykol Ecopark represents a significant step in Astana’s environmental planning. With construction underway and planting set to begin soon, the city expects the first public spaces to open within the year. The completed project will provide a well-maintained green area for both wildlife and residents to enjoy.
