Amsterdam's Conscious Hotel Reopens with Bold, Sustainable Design

Conscious Hotel Museum Square in Amsterdam has reopened after a major renovation. The project aimed to blend sustainability with bold design, proving that eco-friendly spaces can also be stylish. This marks another step in the brand's mission to redefine green hospitality without sacrificing aesthetics.

The renovation was led by designers Karina Schaffer and Wendy Mahieu. Their goal was to reveal the 'sexy side of eco'—creating a space that feels luxurious while staying true to sustainability principles. The lobby and ground-floor rooms now draw inspiration from Willem de Kooning's North Atlantic Light, blending artistic flair with environmental responsibility.

Conscious Hotels already operate four locations across Amsterdam, including Vondelpark and Westerpark. Each property follows strict green practices, from using 100% renewable energy to serving locally brewed beer. The Museum Square branch also features an eco roof designed to attract local wildlife, reinforcing the brand's commitment to biodiversity. The hotel's design philosophy centres on deconstructing and repurposing materials. Instead of discarding old fixtures, the team reimagined them into new, functional elements. This approach reduces waste while adding unique character to the space. Currently, no new Conscious Hotels are planned or under construction in the city, as the focus remains on refining existing properties.

The revamped Museum Square location now stands as a model for sustainable yet sophisticated hospitality. Its mix of renewable energy, wildlife-friendly features, and striking design sets a benchmark for future projects. Guests can expect the same eco-conscious ethos across all four Amsterdam hotels—without compromising on style or comfort.
