A-Team Support Group Transforms Lives in Bergisch Gladbach's Fight Against Obesity

A local support group for people affected by obesity, known as the A-Team, has been making strides since its launch in 2022. Formed through a partnership between individuals struggling with weight issues and the self-help coordinator at EVK Hospital, the group offers a safe and judgement-free space for members to share experiences and find support. The A-Team was established in 2022 after individuals living with obesity teamed up with the self-help coordinator at EVK Hospital. The group, officially registered with the Adipositas Verband Deutschland e.V., remains the only recognised self-help initiative for obesity in the Rhein-Berg-Kreis.

Regular meetings are held every 2nd and 4th Monday of the month at EVK Hospital, located at Ferrenbergstraße 24, 51465 Bergisch Gladbach. Sessions take place on the first floor of the yellow building, providing a welcoming environment for open discussions. The group addresses a range of factors contributing to obesity, including poor diet, emotional stress, hormonal imbalances, and genetic predisposition. Members support one another through shared experiences, focusing on better nutrition and regular physical activity. At least two and a half hours of exercise per week are recommended to help manage weight.

Beyond regular meetings, the A-Team collaborates with external organisations like the EVK Hospital's Self-Help Contact Center and Obesity Germany for additional resources. Plans are underway to host informational events featuring specialists, such as a nutritionist with expertise in obesity management. The group also connects with a related initiative, Adipositas SHG Bergisches Land, which meets in Solingen.

The A-Team continues to grow as a key resource for those dealing with obesity in the region. By offering mutual support, expert-led events, and practical strategies, the group helps members take steps toward healthier lifestyles.
