A Tree with a Romantic Past

Over the weekend, a Minsk resident named Darya stumbled upon a blooming magnolia right in the courtyard of her apartment building—a stunning spring discovery she eagerly shared on Threads. Commenters were less surprised by the tree itself than by its precocious timing. Typically, magnolias like this don't bloom for another two weeks, sometimes not until May. The Botanical Garden confirmed this, noting that their own magnolias (and cherry blossoms) aren't quite ready for Instagram Stories just yet.

Photographer Onlíner's Aleksandr Ruzhechka, an avid hunter of striking natural phenomena, set out to track down the mysterious magnolia using the vague coordinates provided—and found it. While we won't reveal the exact location (at the owner's request), we can show you where it stands.

As it turns out, the magnolia was planted by a local resident named Vladimir, who lives in one of the buildings near Bangalore Square. He shared the surprisingly romantic story behind how this Asian tree came to grow right beneath his windows.

"Twenty years ago, when my wife and I first moved into this building, she went on a two-month business trip. To welcome her back, I decided to surprise her by planting an entire flower meadow under our windows—magnolia included. I handpicked every flower at the market after studying which ones stay fresh the longest. I even hauled stones from a field to arrange the Sun in the center of the meadow and the Moon off to the side."

The reason? His wife's astrological sign is tied to the Moon, while his is linked to the Sun.

When asked how his wife reacted to the gift, Vladimir laughs: "Twenty years later, and she still can't get enough of it!" And there's plenty to admire—the meadow now boasts nearly a hundred different flowers, from crocuses to tulips. Vladimir gladly shares bulbs with anyone who asks. Some, he admits, used to try digging up plants on their own—until he installed 24/7 video surveillance.

"Yes, my magnolia blooms earlier than it should. First, this corner of the building is sheltered and peaceful. Second, I make sure to clear away all the snow from the meadow throughout winter. By spring, the soil warms up faster in the sun, and everything bursts into bloom almost overnight. The rest of the courtyard is still under snow, but my flowers are already out!"
