Veterinary Nutritionist Dr. Lisa Weeth Joins Freshpet Full-Time to Lead Research
Dr. Lisa Weeth, a leading veterinary nutritionist, has taken on a full-time role at Freshpet as head of veterinary research and communications. The move follows over 15 years of collaboration with the company as a consultant. Her appointment aims to strengthen scientific research into fresh pet foods and their effects on animal health.
Dr. Weeth brings more than two decades of experience in clinical nutrition for dogs and cats. A graduate of UC Davis, she completed her residency in Clinical Nutrition and later established the first dedicated nutrition service at Red Bank Veterinary Hospital. She is also one of fewer than 90 board-certified veterinary nutritionists in the U.S.
In her new position, she will oversee scientific communication with veterinarians and lead research partnerships. Her work will focus on studying how fresh pet foods influence health and well-being. Since joining Freshpet in 2021, she has already contributed to five research projects, including studies on nutrient digestibility in dogs (2022) and weight management in cats (2024). Dr. Weeth will continue her leadership roles with the ACVIM, WSAVA, and AAVN while guiding Freshpet's research and development. She expressed enthusiasm about expanding the company's scientific efforts and fostering stronger ties with veterinarians. Dr. Gerardo Pérez-Camargo, Freshpet's SVP of Research & Development, supports her vision, believing fresh, whole food can significantly improve pets' lives. Her responsibilities will also include shaping new product development and sharing research findings with the veterinary community. Throughout her career, she has provided both in-person and telehealth support to veterinarians and pet owners.
Freshpet's research into fresh pet nutrition is set to grow under Dr. Weeth's leadership. Her expertise and long-standing partnership with the company position her to drive further studies on how diet impacts pets' lifelong health. The findings will help inform veterinarians and pet caregivers about the benefits of fresh food.
