UK flyers demand healthier meals as wellness trends take off mid-air

UK air travellers are pushing for healthier in-flight meals and drinks. A growing number now prioritise wellness when choosing food and beverages mid-flight. This shift reflects broader changes in eating habits, with younger passengers leading the demand for better options.

Nearly half of UK flyers—47%—say they are more aware of wellness when selecting in-flight meals than they were five years ago. Younger travellers, in particular, are driving this change, opting for protein-rich dishes, plant-based meals, and hydrating drinks instead of traditional choices.

Over half—56%—want fresh, minimally processed ingredients in their meals. Another 53% are calling for more hydrating options, such as electrolyte water and vitamin-infused beverages. Meanwhile, 46% prefer low-calorie or portion-controlled meals, and 50% want low-sugar or low-carb alternatives.

Alcohol consumption on flights is also declining, with 41% of passengers now swapping cocktails and wine for healthier drinks like juices or vitamin waters. Additionally, 19% would even pay extra for meals or beverages that support gut health or immunity.

While 46% of flyers believe airline food has improved in recent years, 41% still feel wellness-focused options remain limited. Despite this demand, none of the UK's largest airlines have introduced significant changes to their menus in the last two years.

The demand for healthier in-flight meals is clear, with passengers increasingly seeking protein, hydration, and low-sugar options. Yet, despite growing interest, major UK airlines have not expanded their menus to reflect these preferences. The gap between traveller expectations and available choices remains unaddressed.
