Pickle the Shetland pony defies odds after near-fatal illness

A tiny Shetland pony named Pickle has made a remarkable recovery after being found severely ill in the West Midlands last year. Weighing just 52 kg when rescued, the one-year-old has now bounced back to full health and is ready for a new home. Pickle was discovered in March 2023, unable to stand and struggling to breathe. He was rushed to the Penny Farm Rescue and Rehoming Centre in Blackpool, where vets diagnosed him with strangles, equine flu, and salmonella. His condition was so severe that he tested positive for salmonella more times than any other pony the vet had treated.

After completing a two-week quarantine, Pickle joined the main yard at the centre. His small size worked in his favour, as carers could more easily help him regain his strength. During his recovery, he formed a close bond with another pony named Cheddar. The rescue operation that saved Pickle was part of a larger effort. In the same month, World Horse Welfare took in 37 other horses from the same site in the West Midlands.

Now thriving, Pickle is looking for a permanent home. His recovery highlights the dedication of the rescue team and the resilience of the young pony. The charity continues to care for him while searching for the right adopter.
